east coast hospitality?
dear friends, sitting in the communal kitchen of our motel wing chatting with...no, more like antagonizing...some of the other denizens of our little community, i realize how much that growing up on the east coast as a new england blue blood has really jaded me for the niceties in life. my friends are from the midwest and when i answer their questions bluntly (and honestly) they can be taken aback a bit. of course this could have something to do with the fact that i haven't had coffee today and yesterday i had two large (whilst i'm not talking Bess Eaton TANK-sized cups....they were still large enough to do the trick) [if you remember the TANK, say "heyyyyy"] coffees, fully caffeinated. they must be the things that puts the 'filters' on my thought processes from neuron to spoken word, cuz today those filters are gone today. i've told them a couple times that it isn't that i'm a negative, hating person, it's just that, as an eastern new englander, we will generally let you know what we feel....especially if we're deprived of caffeine. with my love, jed Current Mood: predatory | | Sunday, August 12th, 2007 | | 11:29 am |

I heard that there's an annual drag show in Skagway every year. I also heard that it's cancelled this year (lack of planning). I also heard that I'd be fierce, bitches. Current Mood: FierceCurrent Music: Rent soundtrack | | Thursday, August 9th, 2007 | | 3:29 pm |
Summer...or lack thereof.
Well, folks, we are in the height of summer up here in Southeastern Alaska. 65 and partly sunny. WOOOOOO! no, not really. Skagway is a summer-job town...so many of the workers are college students. I am starting to lose friends that I've been working with over the past few months. It's kinda sad. Only 7 weeks left until the last ship leaves port. Where the hell has this summer gone? Have I done enough cool things? Should I go hiking more? Should I work more? Awww shit son....sit back and relax and have a beer. Or 20. (It's the unofficial mantra around here "Work hard, Party hard".) Current Mood: okayCurrent Music: nada | | Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 | | 3:44 pm |
"Good Morning, Ladies and Gentlemen, if I may have your attention...
...the train arriving directly behind the depot weighs 750 tons and we here at White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad strongly suggest that you remain well behind the yellow line for your safety. Please do not play 'chicken' with the train as it is an inanimate object and does not care if you are an idiot." God, I wish I could say that in my station announcements. He's back. And I'm not talking about Harry Potter, either!
Hey, hey! How's it going? After a year and a half hiatus from LJ, I'm back. It is a kind of odd feeling, too...since I had been posting fairly frequently too...anyways, on to me. I am currently in Skagway, Alaska. Yes, Alaska, there are pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/jedwoodAnd I love it. I'm working for White Pass & Yukon Route Railway as a train agent and station master. I'll be here through the end of September. Oh, on a quick little note, I got Harry Potter 7 the night it came out at 12:30am, read until 6:00am, went to work til 4:00pm and finished it at 6:00pm. Fell asleep after 24 hours of being awake at 8:00pm last night. Woke up at 9:30am this morning and would do it all over again, one of the best books I have read in quite a while. Alright, enough with the mushy good byes. I am not going to be online much after the New Year. I am going to be in Orlando January 3rd thru the 19th. I am very excited that a certain someone may be joining me for a few days in sunny Florida. :-) I am looking to move out of Warren for Feb 1st, going to Providence in the interim. I'll update when I can, otherwise just give me a call on my phone if you have it. ciao Current Mood: accomplished | | 6:28 pm |
Endings and Beginnings
They say that when a door closes in your life, another one opens. I think they're right. It is Jamie's last night in Rhode Island and I have to admit, I feel sad. He and I have been through a lot (and I do mean a LOT!) in three and a half years. And, while I can't speak for him, I know I would do it all again. I have to thank him also for passing (some of) his knowledge of Legos and getting deals at the grocery store to me. Thank you for the rides to the store or to work some days when I was late. Thank you for putting up with the dishes. The mice at Updike St. "The hounds of hell!" Movies on your computer, with the french doors closed, sitting in the overstuffed chairs with the a/c on. The endless nights of fencing on the east side and then moving to be closer to fencing! The parties you threw or got invited to!! The tireless devotion to the toy named: Lego. I guess it paid off, now didn't it, buddy? As I type this, you are making a mess of the apartment, moving things downstairs, packing things up...heh, the only times you messed the apartment up were when you had your legos out. Heh, me on election nights! (Let's just say I get a bit...heated and start yelling at the tv.) Hamburger Helper has never seen so many remakes and flavors. Thank you for introducing me to many of my good friends now. Now, as you go your way, I'm gonna go mine. Two weeks in Orlando, training for a job up at Logan. Good luck in Billund, Denmark. Have fun. Knock'em dead. With love and respect, your roommate jed Current Mood: nostalgic | | 6:26 pm |

Speed Update
I have less than four minutes to successfully update my livejournal as I need to move clothes from the floor in my bed room to the washer to the dryer to the basket in 3.5 minutes. Anyways, I got my packet from JetBlue today. I fly out on the 3rd of January for Orlando, where I will be for the following 15 days. Got all my benefit information stuff...medical, dental, flight benefits, et al, today. Very exciting! Got my itinerary for my flights last night, so it's good that I know where I am going, when I have to be there, etc. Well, this is going to mean that as of Friday, December 30th, 2005, Jamie is taking the computer to his sister's house and I will not have access to the internet for a while. Time to do laundry. Current Mood: nostalgicCurrent Music: Destiny's Child - Crazy Right Now | | Tuesday, December 27th, 2005 | | 6:50 pm |
Stolen from Mel the Wit (52% dark, 30% spontaneous, 31% vulgar) | your humor style: CLEAN | COMPLEX | DARK
You like things edgy, subtle, and smart. I guess that means you're probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.
I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer.
Your sense of humor takes the most thought to appreciate, but it's also the best, in my opinion.
You probably loved the Office. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check it out here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice/.

I think I am going to make a "Retail Employee's Bill of Rights" along with a "Customer Behavior Checklist". Heh. Oh and I got some cool stuff for Christmas, by far the best was 19 $1 Silver Certificates that my Mom gave me from the '30s, '40s and '50s along with 4 $2 bills from the '20s and '50s. | | 6:12 pm |

"The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision." Thanks, Kyle. (PS: I have no idea if it's true.) | | Thursday, December 15th, 2005 | | 11:03 pm |
